Substitute Teacher Training Rationale

Needs Assessment:

Problems:

  • Students breaking school rules more frequently when there is a substitute

    • Identified cause: Employee unawareness of school rules, procedures, and routines. Substitutes underprepared in classroom management strategies.

  • Inappropriate behavior from substitutes: phone use, inappropriate language or discussion topics

    • Identified cause: Employee unaware of, or not adhering to best practices in educational institutions. Lack of accountability and support.

  • Incomplete student work when there is a substitute

    • Identified cause: Lack of teaching strategies. Lack of classroom management strategies.

  • Substitutes not knowing emergency protocol during drills

    • Identified cause: Per diem employees not present at informational meetings, unaware of protocol. Substitutes working in multiple schools are expected to know multiple school policies.

Solution Rationale:

A common thread in the identified causes of each employee problem, is inadequate knowledge of school policies and protocols. Substitutes will benefit from training on employee best practices, common emergency protocol, and classroom management.

After reading about employee expectations, learners will interact with situational scenarios. Scenario based training will assess employee ability to handle emergency situations, and common situations that arise in the classroom.

The learner will be provided with teaching strategies to help learners complete their assigned work, and manage behaviors.

Furthermore, employees will be guided through the daily expectations and routines expected of a substitute teacher to ensure completion of duties.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Substitute teachers will demonstrate ability to act in accordance with emergency protocol, as assessed by their chosen actions in emergency scenarios.

  2. Employees will be equipped with a classroom management toolkit, and apply these principles to demonstrate best practices in handling common classroom scenarios.

  3. By the end of this training, employees will correctly identify what behaviors to avoid, to adhere to a professional level appropriate for the K-12 school setting.
